GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE SCHOOL
THE FUNCTION OF THE FACULTY AND CONTACTS

Our fundamental principle and duty is to teach our students how to help people and how to make scientific researches on a continuous basis throughout their medical lifetimes. The Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medical Faculty has aimed to educate and bring up doctors, who are always aware of their responsibilities in the secular, modern and democratic way of life that Atatürk has determined for Turkey and who will contribute to the social life of Turkey.

In our Faculty we try to provide an atmosphere that is appropriate for scientific discussions of our students, who are coming from Turkey and different countries throughout the world. In Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty as well as educating and bringing up the successful doctors of the next generations, we also provide the necessary free atmosphere for the academicians, who really have the sprit of a researcher. The doctors and researchers will carry the sprit of Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty of İstanbul University to not only to our faculty, but also to many different universities of our country and foreign countries.

The Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty is located on a piece of land of about 350.000 meter square and it consist of 20 separate buildings that cover a total of 210.000 meter square of indoor space and these buildings accommodate the dean’s office, the auditorium, the dining hall, the closed sports saloon, the central library , the faculty of basic sciences, the mono-block, the new polyclinics, the emergency-orthopedics-neurosurgery department, pediatrics-gynecology department, the gynecologic oncology department, neurology-physical therapy department, the housing for nurses, the English Medical School, the radiation oncology department, the psychiatry department, the vocational training school for health services, the medical museum and the diseases of respiratory tract department.

HISTORY

The modern medical education in Turkey started with the foundation of İstanbul Darrülfünun that was founded Mahmut II on 14th of March 1827. With the aid of the university reform, executed in 1933, the school of medicine was formed in the İstanbul University and one was named as Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine.
The name, Cerrahpaşa, is taken from surgeon Mehmet Paşa, who was the surgeon of the palace at the time of Sultan Murat III and Sultan Mehmet III and who had later become a grand vizier.
On the 14th of December 1930, Atatürk had visited the hospital and been delighted to see the condition of the hospital and had stated his desire to enlarge the facilities of the hospital. 

BASIC SCIENCES

The basic sciences departments of Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty consists of 8 major science departments: the anatomy department, the physiology department, the microbiology department, the biochemistry department, the biophysics department, deontology-history of medicine department, the medical biology department, and the histology-embriology department.

CLINICAL SCIENCES

The surgical sciences departments of Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty are listed below:
anesthesiology, pediatric surgery, general surgery, thoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery, eye surgery, emergency unit department, gynecology and obstetrics, ear- nose and throat surgery, neurosurgery, the orthopedics and traumatology, pathology, plastic surgery and urology.

The internal medical sciences departments consist of 16 major departments: forensic medicine, the department of family health, pediatrics, dermatology, pharmacology and clinical pharmacology, the physical therapy-rehabilitation department, chest diseases, the department of heath services for the community, internal medicine, cardiology, neurology, nuclear medicine, psychiatry, the radiation oncology, infectious diseases, clinical microbiology and radiology.

Our faculty is one of the most important education and health institutes of Turkey or even of the Balkans and Middle East and in our faculty an average of 3000 outpatients and 1500 in-patients are treated daily and it gives service to almost ten thousand people in a day.

THE OPERATING ROOMS

In Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty there are 43 operational beds in 8 operating theatres. These rooms are located in the mono-block building (general surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, urology, cardiovascular surgery and thoracic surgery) and the departments of eye surgery, emergency surgery, gynecologic and obstetrics, nose, ear and throat surgery, the neurosurgery and the orthopedics surgery.

The average number of beds in our faculty is about 2000. In our polyclinics with an average of 400.000 patients get treatment per year of which about 30.000 are in-patients. 20.000 surgical and 1500 labor operations are performed yearly. In the faculty, there are 30 intensive care beds. 

THE EDUCATIONAL PERSONEL

In 39 major departments, there are 1100 educational personnel giving service for basic sciences departments in the Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine.

Our educational personel consist of 400 professor doctors, 150 associate professors, 6 assistant professor doctors, 5 lecturers, 3 specialists, 33 research personel, 429 graduates of medical school who are studying to become a specialist and 89 specialist doctors.

THE EDUCATION

In Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty a medicine program in Turkish has been given starting from the year 1967, since the foundation year of the faculty. In addition to this program, an English medical school established since 1987. The medicine program in Turkish consists of 6 years and the yearly student capacity is 266. After the completion of the program successfully, the graduate diploma for medicine is awarded. At the time being 2000 students are studying in our faculty in this program in Turkish.
The education program in Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty in English, consists of 7 years. The first year is a preparatory class for English language. The yearly student capacity is 57. 

CERRAHPAŞA JOURNAL OF MEDICINE

Cerrahpaşa Journal of Medicine is the publication instrument of the Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty and it is published four times a year.

THE ACCOMMODATION CONDITIONS

The students of our Faculty can live in the dormitories of “Kredi Yurtlar Kurumu” and in private dormitories. In addition to these dormitories, there are two other dormitories for girls with a capacity of 60 students each, all rooms accommodating one student each. As these two dormitories are located in the campus, it is very easy for our students, staying in these dormitories, to have access to the amphitheaters and hospital.
